RedGer Art Gallery

A joint exhibition of previously unpublished film photographs by photographers Ts. Batzorig and L. Elbegzaya from the Ts. Batzorig Documentary Photography Archive will be organized within the framework of the “HERITAGE” project, in celebration of the 90th anniversary of photography.
Legacy: A Photographic Dialogue Between Time and Memory

This exhibition has a rare and striking visual dialogue between two Mongolian photographers—Ts. Batzorig (1964–2016) and L. Elbegzaya. They are associated with the "HERITAGE" project initiated by the Batzorig Foundation, Documentary Photography Archive.

For the first time, the public gets to see the professional color prints that were meticulously restored and printed from the original film negatives. They are a part of the visual substantiation of a dialogue between two photographers and the decades-long content of their work. They contain some snippets of Mongolia's ongoing transformation, in which the "HERITAGE" project plays an ongoing part.
The heart of this exhibition beats with the legacy of Ts. Batzorig, whose deep observational lens immortalized Mongolia’s profound changes during the 1990s and early 2000s. He captured those times with an unparalleled accuracy and intense focus, working on the very edge of defiance. Batzorig combined scenes of quotidian life with portraits of formerly singular figures and shrines, investing both with the same level of understanding and generosity found in a close reading of sacred texts. His images draw the viewer in, demanding that we observe the minimal details he has rendered with such quiet intensity.
When placed thoughtfully alongside one another, the works of L. Elbegzaya offer a counterpoint perspective that is an essential part of the work Batzorig is doing. Batzorig's works are about rural life, everyday resilience, and the enduring presence of tradition. Elbegzaya's photographs dialogue with those of Batzorig and lend further continuity to the collective visuals that Batzorig's works form. Batzorig, Elbegzaya, and their respective visual dialogues with and about different parts of Mongolia form a collective memory for the viewer.
This exhibition takes not just the photograph but the act of remembering. It asks the viewer to consider—in the way these two artists do—that Mongolia keeps both the human spirit and landscape in active conversation across an eternity we are invited to glimpse through their works.
