Artist Biography
Soyolmaa Davaakhuu (b.1977, Mongolia) is an established artist based in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Early in her childhood, she was introduced to art by her artist parents. She studied at the Institute of Fine Arts (est.1945, now renamed as Mongolian Academy of Fine Arts), between 1993-1998. In 2001, she became a member of the Union of Mongolian Artists (est.1942, UMA), the largest association of professional visual artists in the country. In 2006, she was invited for an Artist-in-Residence Programme at the Oglethorpe University Museum of Art in Atlanta, USA, where she created new pieces for the exhibition titled “Portals to Shangri-La: Masterpieces from Buddhist Mongolia”. Since 2016, Soyolmaa has been in partnership with www.dakiniasart.org, which is an online gallery platform featuring international artists.
Her art has been studied extensively by Dr. Uranchimeg Tsultem, art historian, curator and assistant professor (Herron School Of Art And Design, Indiana University, USA) within a context of Buddhist and contemporary art. In particular, she was praised for having the deep respect and the insight into Buddhism, deities and meditation but not strictly following the iconography. Dr Tsultem concluded that Soyolmaa's interpretation of Buddhist rituals and dakinis are humanised through portrayals of ordinary men and women free of beauty standards set by the Buddhist art masters.
Soyolmaa is a master of various mediums; acrylic and oil paintings, silk painting, appliques and embroidery. In 2021, she began to go beyond pictorial art and experimenting with mixed media by integrating objects into her paintings. With over 23 years of experience, Soyolmaa staged 8 solo exhibitions and participated in 17 local and international group exhibitions in the USA, Canada, UK, South Korea, Vietnam and India. In 2021, the Ministry of Culture of Mongolia honoured her with an award titled “Leading Cultural Worker” for her contribution to the field. In 2022, UMA bestowed her with its highest award named after the 80 year old institution. Currently, she is planning her 9th solo exhibition titled “Let It Be” at the Union of Mongolian Artists Art Gallery.
